Want to know the benefits and shortcomings of blowback and non-blowback airsoft pistols? This also applies to airsoft guns but there is a crossover with air guns.
What is Blowback?
Blowback when used in airsoft or airgun terminology refers to the slide movement. Since there is no fire or “explosion” that happens as it does when shooting a firearm, it’s the gas that the pistol uses to power the system that “blows” the slide back.
What is GBB or Gas Blowback?
Gas Blowback airsoft guns are powered by green gas, a mixture of propane and silicone oil. This gas is stored at a lower pressure than CO2 and as a result is much more friendly for use in close quarters airsoft guns as they produce velocities less than 350 FPS. The gas also moves the slide back when the trigger is pulled, simulating the cyclic action of a firearm.
What is CO2 Blowback?
CO2 powered blowback airsoft pistols usually have a movable slide that moves back and forth with each shot or squeeze of the trigger. Some CO2 is used to move the slide rearwards as well as propel the airsoft BB. The blowback motion of the slide on some blowback airsoft pistols can also cock the hammer or internal striker allowing for true single action trigger pull. But not always. And some have the potential for full auto capabilities since they can have a true semi auto action. There is some noticeable recoil from the Blowback action simulating the recoil of a real gun.
What is Non-Blowback or NBB?
Non-Blowback airsoft guns (and airguns) can have fixed or movable slides but they will not cycle back and forth on their own with each shot. Non-blowback (NBB) airsoft pistols usually have fewer working parts since no blowback valves or mechanisms are required to make a slide move. There are some blowback and non-blowback replica airsoft guns that field strip similarly to their real steel counterparts but this is most commonly found in blowback versions. Non-blowback airsoft handguns require the shooter to cock the hammer for single action shooting or use a double action trigger pull for semi auto performance. This type of airsoft gun can be called standard action as well.
